Employee State Insurance (ESI) is a social security scheme governed by the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948. It provides medical, monetary, and other benefits to employees in case of sickness, maternity, disability, or employment injury. ESI is managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.
Employers having 10 or more employees (in some states, 20 or more) with a monthly wage of up to ₹21,000 (₹25,000 for disabled employees) must register under ESI.
1. Employer Registration: Businesses that meet the eligibility criteria must register with ESIC.
2. Employee Registration: Employees eligible for ESI benefits are registered under the scheme.
• For Employers:
o Any organization with 10 or more employees (or 20 in some states) must register under ESI.
o Includes factories, shops, hotels, cinemas, restaurants, educational institutions, and other establishments.
• For Employees:
o Employees earning up to ₹21,000 per month (₹25,000 for disabled employees) are eligible for ESI benefits.
o Employees must contribute 0.75% of their wages, while the employer contributes 3.25%.
• Medical Benefits: Comprehensive medical care for employees and dependents at ESI hospitals and dispensaries.
• Sickness Benefits: Employees get cash compensation of 70% of their wages for up to 91 days during medical leave.
• Maternity Benefits: Female employees receive full salary for 26 weeks of maternity leave.
• Disability Benefits: Financial assistance in case of temporary or permanent disability due to work-related injuries.
• Dependent Benefits: Monthly compensation to family members in case of death due to employment injury.
• Unemployment Benefits: Financial support for up to 24 months for employees who lose their jobs due to retrenchment or disability.

1. Login to ESIC Portal: Employers must visit the ESIC website and register.
2. Fill in Business Details: Provide details like name, address, number of employees, and wages.
3. Upload Documents: Submit required documents for verification.
4. Make Payment: Employers must pay their contribution (3.25% of employees’ wages).
5. Receive ESI Code Number: Upon successful registration, a 17-digit ESI number is issued.
6. Employee Registration: Employers must enroll eligible employees into the ESI system.
