Copyright registration provides legal protection to creators of original literary, artistic, musical, and dramatic works. It grants the copyright holder exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, and license the work.
In India, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957 and is administered by the Copyright Office under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. While copyright protection exists automatically upon creation of a work, formal registration provides stronger legal proof in case of disputes or infringement claims.
Copyright can be registered for the following types of works:
1. Literary Works – Books, manuscripts, articles, computer programs, and software.
2. Artistic Works – Paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and architectural designs.
3. Musical Works – Compositions with or without lyrics, including sheet music.
4. Dramatic Works – Scripts, screenplays, plays, and theatrical performances.
5. Cinematographic Films – Feature films, documentaries, short films, and video content.
6. Sound Recordings – Audio recordings, podcasts, and music albums.
7. Broadcasting and Performance Rights – Protection for television and radio broadcasts, as well as performances by artists.
